What Causes Severe Pain In Leg While Walking?

I have moderate pain to the outside of my right leg, to the top of my right ankle and right calf which gets worse when I walk or put more weight on it. At times I have to stop just to take a break from the pain and get the weight off. The pain is alleviated by sitting especially with my right leg elevated. I have not engaged in any excessive exercise that I think would have caused the pain. It started three days ago. Years ago my family physician found something out with my lower back when I had pain traveling down my right leg and gave me exercises to do which alleviated the pain. could this be related to the spinal column or nerve? I keep myself in shape and I am an avid cyclist.

Hello

Thank you for posting at HCM.

Pain starting from lower back, one sided, outer side of the leg, and a cyclist, points to "Sciatica" . This is usually due to compression on lower back or disc herniation. In such cases we advise patients to go for XRay spine & lower back, MRI Lumbar region, Nerve conduction tests to confirm the diagnosis.

I understand that the pain in sciatica is unbearable. We advise our patients in such cases to start with lower NSAIDs at first and then to progress to opioids depending on pain profile of the patient. You may also benefit by a procedure called nerve block through phenol injection if the pain is too severe and is affecting your daily activities.

We suggest you to visit an orthopaedic or a spine surgeon for the problem. Though very debilitating symptomatic relief is possible with the cautious use of medicines in this disease.

Taking rest, using back braces etc are some of other modalities, and surgical correction is the cure of the disease to relieve the compression.

Hope to have informed you sufficiently.
