What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Part Of The Neck And Fatigue?

My 19-yr old son just started college in the NE. He is experiencing flu-like symptoms, including severe pain in the lower part of his neck, achy, tired. He has tested Negative for flu and mono and tonsils look only a little irritated (according to doctor he has seen on campus). He was prescribed a Z-pac, just in case. I m concerned about this and would like to know your opinion. He can t see an ENT dr. until next week, unless he goes to the ER.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Irritated tonsils may be due to tonsilitis. This condition is mostly caused by respiratory viruses and will need only symptomatic treatment. However, bacteria infection or superinfection is possible and will justify the use of antibiotics. This condition could as well be caused by allergy.I will suggest you try the following:
-Take the Z-pac as prescribed by his Doctor since bacteria infection is possible and respiratory bacteria infections respond well to this molecule.
-Take a steroid like prednisolone for a few days to prevent side effects
-An anti-histamine like benadryl
-Take frequent sips of water
-Gargle with salty water many times in a day
-Avoid environmental irritants like dust, cold and smoke
If the problem persist with these measures, you then see the ENT for further evaluation.
Hope this will help
Best regards
