What Causes Severe Pain In Shoulder Along With Reduced Mobility?

Good afternoon. I am a 64 year old male recently retired and for past several months have bee6n experiencing pretty severe right shoulder pain. The pain is such that I have difficulties raising my right hand above my head and affects sleeping on my right side. Discomfort, not pain, when arm not in use but, sometimes when forget about the arm and raised suddenly or jolted- extreme pain. I am left handed and have retired from all sports approx. 6 years ago. Very active in sports most of my life but totally inactive at present time. I have been to my doctor last week and do have xrays schedules for next week. Can you provide any guidance?? I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello,

Severe amount of pain with inability to perform maneuvers involving above shoulder movements indicate various possibilities such as:
- Frozen shoulder
- Osteoarthritis shoulder
- Rotator cuff injury or inflammation
- Post traumatic event

In my clinic , depending upon the probable lesion, I recommend an x- ray or MRI of the shoulder for the final diagnosis and cure. Till that time, following measures can help you:
- Use heating pad over shoulder
- Apply analgesic spray or ointment containing Diclofenac, Capsaicin Menthol or else
- Analgesic and anti inflammation medicine
- Assisted physiotherapy
