What Causes Severe Pain In The Abdominal Cavity?

My wife went to the ER last night for severe pain in the upper right abdominal cavity (behind her ribs) and was VERY painful to breathe, with severe pain that spread to the back and scapula and shoulder. She received a chest X-ray of the area (deemed negative for anything obvious as a cause), as well as a thorough ultrasound of the area which included reviews of the heart underside, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, and kidney. None were found to be abnormal from this exam. Blood and urine also didn t provide guidance. She has been in mild pain all day for the third, with the pain becoming extreme at around 8:30 at night. What the hell is going on?!? THis is now the THIRD night of her screaming out in pain! Please help! (I was certain it was gall bladder, but ER Doc said no...now I m confused and concerned.)

Given that she had various tests already, and many conditions have been ruled out, there is a possibility of shingles. The pain can be severe and occurs BEFORE the blistering rash. It can occur anywhere on the body, and covers a single dermatome ( where the nerve goes out from the spinal cord). Has she received the shingles vaccine? If she gets a rash in the area of the pain, she should see a physician for anti- viral medications.
