What Causes Severe Pain In The Chest Along With Nausea?

My 50 year old son has been having frequent episodes of stabbing chest pains intermittently for almost a week. The pain is localized to the left chest wall and radiates through to his shoulder blade. He said they ruled out an aortic dissection but I don t know how that did that. He had a stress test and CT scan today, which ruled out MI and PE. His blood pressure is elevated. He is very tired . No nausea or shortness of breath. They gave him NTG, but now he doesn t know whether to take it. It doesn t always help. He believes it is NOT GERD, as he has had that in the past and recognizes the type of pain he gets with it. I am a retired nurse and he keeps calling me for advise. I no longer know what to advise. Can you help us?

Hello,

What I understand that in absence of risk factor, the absence of dyspnea and the normal test all are enough to say that this is not a cardiac pain. It does not look to be from the lung based well as no cough and no ShortNess of breath.

Gerd is not like this. So to mee, it looks like a mechanical(muscular) pain. I wonder if this was started after some heavy lifting or any trauma to the chest also if you could ask if the pain increases with movement of the chest like telling to the side or pressing on the chest and most probably this would be a mechanical pain. You can advise some massage of the chest. Apply some hot application, paracetamol, and brufen etcetera. If this does not help or if anything sounds another way, he should not hesitate to meet a doctor and also to see the skin for any lesions around that part.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
