What Causes Severe Pain In The Groin Area?

I am a fit 70 yr old woman. I have severe lower groin pain after light digging for a short while yesterday. Would this be muscle strain? Its not happened before and as I have an allotment I don t want to be unable to dig without pain. I can hardly walk today.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This is probably inguinal muscle strain due to injury or wrong movements and it should be treated with non-steroid painkillers, rest, and cold compresses. However, if there is a bulge in inguinal area then it may suggest inguinal hernia and in this case, you should see a surgeon for further management. All in all it is very important for you to rest till pain subsides since you may just worsen the injury. In most cases, it pulls back on its own and there is no need for any interventions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
