What Causes Severe Pain In The Knees And Buttocks After An Injury?

I tripped and fell due to a crack on the sidewalk. I managed to somehow to take the fall using my hands and turning my body in order to avoid landing on my knees since 3 months ago I landed on my hands and knees, resulting in severe pain and bloody gashes to both knees. My knees took over 6 weeks to heal and more time to be able to kneel without discomfort.. This recent fall, 3 days ago resulted in a very serious deep pain in my right buttock which hurts with every step I take. It also makes stair climbing difficult and painful. My hip doesn t hurt when I sit or lay in bed. I have been taking Ibuprofen 600, which offers little help, I have been using ice packs when I come home from work, and resting in bed in the evening. My job is taking care of a 10 month old baby and 2 toddlers, in a house with many stairs! After I am finished 8 hours, walking home is almost impossible, I look like the slowest walker, in the world, due to the incredible pain. the pain does not radiate down my leg. It feels like I may have had a fracture somewhere deep inside. I looked for bruises, no bruise on the surface, no noticable swelling, just the inability to walk without limping and severe pain. What is your recommendation,? Do I need an xray?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

A severe knee pain with swelling of the leg can be due to arthritis, bursitis or DVT. Proper diagnosis needs a direct examination and few investigations like X-ray and color Doppler of the leg. Till then mild pain killers, rest hot compress, application of local analgesic gel and a knee brace can help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
