What Causes Severe Pain In The Knees?

Have had a lot of pain for the past 2 weeks in my knee. Had a cortisone shot on the sixth day. Still in pain. Went back to the doctor and asked if I should take an MRI? He said he didn t recommend taking an MRI right now because you wouldn t be able to see anything because of the Cortisone shot. He recommended waiting about 5 weeks. Still in a lot of pain. Should I wait that long since I ve had pain for 2 weeks already?

Hello Dear. You had been given a cortisone shot because there was inflammation around the knee joint. It will take atleast 4-5 weeks for the inflammation to completely settle down. Hence a MRI taken before that may not give a complete picture of the underlying disease condition. So i suggest you to wait patiently for another 3 weeks and then to get an MRI as suggested by your doctor.

Meanwhile you can follow some of these home remedies to decrease pain and inflammation

1. Rest and protect an injured or sore area. Stop, change, or take a break from any activity that may be causing your pain or soreness. When resting, place a small pillow under your knee.

2. Ice will reduce pain and swelling. Apply ice or cold packs immediately to prevent or minimize swelling. Apply the ice or cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 or more times a day.

3. Compression, or wrapping the injured or sore area with an elastic bandage (such as an Ace wrap), will help decrease swelling. Don't wrap it too tightly, since this can cause more swelling below the affected area. Loosen the bandage if it gets too tight. Signs that the bandage is too tight include numbness, tingling, increased pain, coolness, or swelling in the area below the bandage.

5. Use a cane or crutch in the hand opposite your painful knee.
Use two crutches, keeping weight off the leg with the sore knee. You can get canes or crutches from most pharmacies. Crutches are recommended if a cane causes you to walk with a limp.

6. Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow. Do not massage the injured area if it causes pain.

7. If your doctor has already prescribed pain killers like paracetamol, ibuprofen or diclofenac, you can use it as prescribed.

You can follow all these steps till you meet your doctor again. Till then do not worry.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
