What Causes Severe Pain In The Knees?

I am a 51 yr-0ld female and played competitive ice hockey for 10 yrs. I hadn t skated for several years and participated in a professional clinic this past Wed. evening. I got clipped in the side of my knee during a mixed gender crimmage. It hurt, but I played out the rest of the scrimmage and thought little about it. My knee felt a bit fragile and compromised after the hit, but other than feeling a bit sore, I was OK on Thursday morning. By Thursday afternoon my knee hurt somewhat when I stood up, but as soon as I started moving I was fine. Same with today (Friday morning). As the day has progressed, however, my symptoms have worsened, and while I don t have any pain when I m not moving or when I m UP and moving, getting up (to a standing position) is increasingly difficult (seemingly worse every time I do it) causing me to now at times gasp in pain for a second or two. Once I start moving I m now walking with a very slight limp and then eventually I can walk gingerly and am OK. Again, when I m sitting or not moving, I feel no pain. It s when I stand up and put pressure on the knee for the first time after sitting that I feel a shocking pain...I m not sure what to do -- get a soft brace and wait it out, seeing if the pain will go away - or if I should see an orthopedist.

Hi,

First of all I'm impressed with your courage to play.your symptoms of knee might probably be due to unusual twisting. In my experience, most of the patients involving in sports, suffer a meniscus tears. But please don't worry.

Let me throw some light on the above topic :

1) It is completely treatable.
2) Examination by an expert ortho doctor is necessary for an accurate diagnosis and management.
3) 1 or 2 imaging tests like x-ray,CT scan would do the job. 4) Meniscus is an integral part of knee joint and if not repaired early,it may potentiate osteoarthritis of knee.
5) Surgery if necessary,is done arthroscopically.
6) recovery is complete and needs 8 weeks of bed rest.

So,it would be better to see the orthopedic doctor for early treatment. Hope your doubts get clarified with my answer.

Hope I have answered your query.
