What Causes Severe Pain In The Left Hip Of A Child?

Hello, my son is 8 yrs old and is having pretty bad left hip pain. Any pressure at all and it kills him.Had this same thing about 6 months ago and had an MRI done. They said it was just bad inflammation in his hip. Now it has started again in the same area and he is in pretty bad pain. Could it be the same thing again? If so, what is causing this?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Does he have a fever? There are several causes of hip pain and limp in a school-aged child:
- Bacterial infection of the hip joint.
- Transient synovitis of the hip.
- A condition where the very top of the big bone in upper leg slips off (usually in children who are obese).
- A condition in which the blood supply to the top of this big bone dies.

Especially as his hip pain has returned, the reason for hip inflammation needs to be determined and soon to avoid permanent disability in that hip. Seek evaluation from a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd,
