What Causes Severe Pain In The Left Hip?

my mother is a 70 year old woman who has a Aortic Valve condition along with a previous thoracic to upper lumber area back surgery. She was experiencing severe pain shooting from left hip down leg. She went to a physician who diagnosed it as sciatic nerve pain and was given a steroid/cortisone shot along with pain medication in the left hip/muscle. She experienced excruciating pain that went from her hip muscle to heart. It almost knocked her to the ground and I/her daughter had to hold on to her to keep her from falling and was helped to her vehicle by the med. assistant. it has been about 1 and 1/2 weeks and she having heart pains and her sciatic pain seems to be getting worse! What should we do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history related to your 70 year old Mother having has spinal surgery and has aortic valve problem.
The recent development of pain going from hip to the leg and diagnosed as sciatica by her Physician indicates the need of the following:
Since the pain increased on local steroid shot it is important to get the opinion of a NEurologist and have CT scan or MRI of the lower vertebrae to see for the cause of compression of spinal cord as well as to think about a surgery as per the reports.
Till then give her the nerve pain medications like Gabapentin or Amitriptyline or Tegritol as would be advised by her Physician or Neurologist.
Give complete rest.
Also watch for blood pressure, diabetes and so on.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
