Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a high school basketball official and a retired paramedic/firefighter. One year ago I had surgery at the L-4 level that included a laminectomy and a formanotomy (sp). Recently while officiating and without any sort of buildup to the problem that I was able to detect, I began having extreme pain in the L hip. There is pain on sitting when I push in on the greater trochanter area. I take an anti-inflammatory when officiating and have been able to get through my games but am wondering what the rule outs are here. Could there be a septic condition in the joint. I didn t have any traumatic event prior to this happening.
The pain that you describe, especially if you have pain on the lateral hip in the area of the greater trochanter, which gets worse when you press on that area, is most likely pain from tendinopathy in that area and possibly inflammation in the bursa.
The treatment for this is usually anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. If that is not taking care of the pain, your doctor can inject steroids into the area. Physical therapy can also be helpful.
The septic joint would be unlikely as it is a rare cause of hip pain and typically it would be so painful you could not walk on it. You typically have a fever with it as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
