Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had degenerative disc disease for over 40 yrs. for the past yr. or so, I have been experiencing profuse pain in my entire legs. I don t know that the pain might be radiating from the disc disease. I also have a protruding disc. The pain in my legs was mostly at night, but more recently the pain has caused sleepless nights and disabling pain throughout my days. I have taken Tramadol for my back pain, but it doesn t help lessen the discomfort in my legs. I do have varicose and spider veins in both legs, from thigh to ankle. What could be the culprit to the unbelievable pain in my legs?
Both of your conditions need surgical intervention as it disables you from your routine work. Protruding disk leads to narrowing of intervertebral space from which nerves distribute as well as disk itself compresses the nerve roots. Compression of these sensory and motor nerves causes tingling sensations and pain. Consult neurosurgeon and get MRI done.
Protruding disk needs to resect and intervertebral space needs to widen through the operation. Varicose veins if causing severe pain, needs surgical ablation through sclerosing agents. Otherwise conservative measures like strap bandage at night before sleeping and leg elevation can be tried. Consult surgeon for it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
