What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Back And Leg While On Fosamax?

I ve been on Fosamax for 5 months to treat osteopena and have terrible lower back and leg pains continuously. I ve called the GYN that prescribed it and was told that it takes longer in some patients for the pain to stop. I m 60 yrs old, very active and have taken 1200 mg calcium and 1600 IU Vit D3 since age 38. I go to the dentists every 6 mos and just did my 6 mont visit today and was told I now have gum problems which wasn t the case in March. I go back to the GYN in November and let her know that I m not taken any longer due to the pain and gum issues. What s your opinion? Pleas help.

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Hello,

As you are 60, there will be degenerative changes in the spine leading to nerve entrapment. Also, medicine which you mentioned above may not lead to an increase in pain but will help reduce the one.

I will advise doing simple exercises which helps the muscles of the lumbar spine and lower limb to get the strength to maintain the joint space.

The exercise which you can perform to improve the joint space and regain muscle strength are - core stability, spinal muscle strengthening exercises, hip muscle strengthening exercises, static Quadriceps, static hamstring, straight leg raise, knee to chest, ankle toe movements, bridging exercise.

In my clinical practice, most patients above age 50 are helped with low-intensity exercises and medicine combination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
