What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Back?

MY Wife was seated on our couch Sunday night and reached for something on the floor with her left arm. She could not reach as far as normal but then felt something pop in her side even with the bottom rib. there was no real pain at that point but then at about 6:00 am Monday she had sharp pain in her side and toward the back and a slight breathing problem. Pain seems to be increasing and she is in increasing discomfort.
