What Causes Severe Pain In The Neck Of A Child?

My 6 yr old daughter is complaining of neck pain on the left side of her neck. It came on suddenly with no injury. There is slight swelling and warmth in the area that hurts. Ibuprofen did not help relieve her pain. The school put ice on it, and I have been using the heating pad on it. She has no pain anywhere else and seems otherwise healthy. Does she need to be seen by a doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern.
You have not mentioned how big the area that is hurting and how big the swelling is.
This can be an insect bite, enlarged lymph node or she may be developing abscess on that site.
Here, application of ice would be better than hot compresses as ice would relieve inflammation.
I would advise you to continue with ibuprofen and wait & watch. You should soon come to know what exactly it is.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Take care.
