What Causes Severe Pain In The Shoulder After An Injury?

My 71 year old wife fell and hit her shoulder on a rock while hiking. The shoulder was extremely painful and The next day a large black bruise started and spread inside her arm past her elbow. We treated her with ice, a sling and pain killers. X-rays revealed no major fracture, it was suggested that there could a major muscle torn away from bone, however, she has full range of motion and can lift her arm (with pain) unassisted. The doctor told she didn t need the sling. Could she still have a tear in spite of her ease of movement?

Hi,

Consult an orthopaedician and get an MRI scan done to rule out ligament injury or tendon involvement. As of now you can take analgesics like Acetaminophen or Tramadol for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query.
