What Causes Severe Pain In The Upper Abdomen?

Last night, I had a really bad pain in my upper abdomen. It s so bad that I get nausea and vomit about three times. I usually get this always in early morning hours and last about four hours. I checked with my doctor and he said I have gastritis, do you think this is the case?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thanks for putting up your query.
Upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting can be because of gastritis.Pancreatitis, gall bladder stones or food poisoning also may give rise to similar clinical picture.
If I were your treating doctor,I would recommend,
-Based on clinical examination,if there are signs of abdominal tenderness, tests like USG abdo,CT scan abdo, blood amylase level may be needed.Further management will depend upon the clinical status and scan result.
-Cap omeprazole plus ondensetron/domperidone once early in morning for 3 -5 days. accompanied by gelusil tablet thrice in a day.
-Avoid spicy food,tea,caffeine and alcohol.
-Adequate rest and intake of plenty of water
-If the symptoms persists or worsens, referral to gastroenterologist for endoscopy will be needed.
Hope this information helps.
Thanks.
