What causes pain in upper stomach in center directly below ribcage? Friend of mine has had several attacks of pain like this for about 2 years. It has been almost a year since it happened but it started Christmas day and lasted about a week. Now he said it has stopped. Doesn t have them constantly.

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to gastritis or gall bladder problems. If severe pain below right rib cage then most likely due to gall bladder problems. An ultrasound examination will be helpful to rule out this. You can also take proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole ( Nexium ) daily. If there is no improvement then consult a gastroenterologist.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
