What Causes Severe Pain, Popping And Drainage In Ears Post Intake Of Decongestant?

All lastweek I had some sinus allergy stuff going on. Which led into the coughing and now pressure in my ears. So yesterday I started taking decongestant along with a cough suppressant and mucus dm w/guaifenesin. This morning at around 5am popping started in my right ear & I felt it when the drainage started coming. But then, this unbelievable pain came (earache like I ve never had)by 8am,I had taken the decongestant, mucus relief & 8 00 mg ibuprofen and got 2hrs of relief. my daughter had found some of my old prescription still in date for per comets and at 11:00am I took 1 and more decongestant cause I was stopped up again. All the while this popping noises and clear drainage has been nonstop. It is now 12hrs later. Help me understand..

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

You seem to be suffering from acute otitis media or middle ear infection. The symptoms of acute otitis media are severe eat pain, middle ear fluid, and fever. The treatment is oral antibiotics form the mainstay of treatment, Amoxicillin is the antibiotic of choice. To reduce pain, NSAIDs like ibuprofen are given. Antipyretics like acetaminophen can also be used. Please do consult an ENT specialist for clinical examination and appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
