What Causes Severe Recurrent Abdominal Cramps?

I am having cramping in the intestines and have the need to use the restroom immediately lately. Then it subsides and I m fine for a half hour or so then it comes on again. I haven t had much to eat today. Just wondering it this could be IBS. I had this a couple of years ago then it quit. I am under tremendous stress with my father having had a stroke. Could it be nerves? Thank you.
