What Causes Severe Sepsis And Septic Shock After A Thyroid Biopsy Procedure?
Hello if anyone can please give me some sort of information I would be so grateful I m so lost and so scared I m going to loose my mom shes my best friend and the only one I have the doctors don t have much to say so this is the run down, My mother went to the doctor to have a thyroid biopsy at 9am the doctor gave her a local started the biopsy he removed one nodule he began to the second nodule at that point he notice my mothers vital signs were not back to normal from the local he had given her and he had to stop that s when all the sudden her blood pressure drop to the life threating amount 50/20 the doctors quickly set her up on iv etc. She was then rushed to ICU where she was admitted by 1pm and where (THANK YOU GOD & ICU DOCTORS) they were able to save her life so thus far she is home today but still extremely Ill the doctors have diagnosed her with SHOCK, SEPTIC SHOCK & SEVERE SEPSIS so what I can t seem to understand as the doctors can not seem to figure out is was this caused from the biopsy she was having that day or was this blood infection something that had to have already been in her body basically is it possible to get this blood infection within a matter a few hours or is that not possible if this makes any sense to anyone it would really help me right now I apologize if its hard to understand as I may be having a difficult time expliaing it due to lack of sleep and emotion thank you so much...

I would like to tell you that infections to come into the blood so soon that within seconds it causes the problems you have mention. Infections generally take hours to days before a patient can go into sepsis or septic shock.
Actually, the history points to the injection that was given for local anesthesia to keep your mother free from pain.
It is generally a drug called lignocaine that is used to numb the area to any pain before a procedure is done.
The problem with lignocaine is that it is a known drug that can cause sudden heart rhythm problems within seconds if it goes into the blood.
It seems that some of the lignocaine that was injected to keep her pain free might have escaped into the bloodstream and straight to the heart causing sudden collapse due to heart rate abnormality.
Therefore I think it was not the sepsis or septic shock. Good news is that fortunately your mother has survived the dangerous consequence of the medication and as time passes the danger reduces further as the level of drugs go done in the blood.
