What Causes Severe Shoulder Pain In An Arthritis Patient?

My husband has recently been diagnosed with RA but he is also experiencing severe pain in his shoulders, usually one shoulder at a time. The pain is so bad he can hardly move his entire arm. From what we understand RA does not generally move from side to side. Can this be a symptom of his RA?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear patient
Rheumatoid arthritis affects mainly small joints of hands and foot but it has also tendency of affecting large joints especially knee and elbow. Shoulder is rarely affected but not uncommon. So what treatment is prescribed for ra? If you are taking disease modifying agents then they should benefit entire body including shoulder joints. So if you are on medication and shoulder pain is not relieved Mri of involved shoulder is recommended. MRI hives detail information about articular surface , soft tissue and rotator cuff abnormalities. So visit radiology center nearby you and get it done. If it abnormal consult expert shoulder surgeon.
