What Causes Severe Shoulder Pain?

I injured my neck on Wednesday afternoon. It is not getting better and the pain goes into my shoulders and up into the back of my head. I am guessing it is muscle and there is nothing that can be done and it just needs time to heal. What are your thoughts about it.
