What Causes Severe Sore Throat Post Intake Of Topiramate?
I was on Topiramate 25mg twice a day for my MS and to control my headaches. Then I began seizures, the MRI showed it was MS induced epilepsy because one of my lesions are located directly on the area where Epilepsy is formed at. The Neurologist and Epilepsy Dr switched dosage from 50 mg a day to 100 mg twice a day. My last medication was a generic and this one isn t. I just began this one and I have had a horrible sore throat since then. I was just curious if it was related
There are 2 main explanations for sore throat after increasing Topiramate dose: 1. This increase in dose itself has made you more anxious 2. If you are also having any gastrointestinal changes (diarrhea, etc.), that might have caused dehydration or increased stomach hyperacidity.
I think you should keep good oral hygiene. If any heartburn, take antacids but at least 2 hours after taking topiramate.
If still no improvement, should check it out with your caring doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
