What Causes Severe Sore Throat While On Methimazole?

my 18 yr old daughter was prescribed 5 mg of methimazole per day. The nurse told me that I should look ut for sore throat or fever. She says that she has a pretty bad sore throat (though I am not totally sure it isn t from strep which she has been taking antibiotics for 10 days now). Should I stop giving her the methimazole?

Hi,
I would recommend that your daughter should undergo complete blood count with differential count investigation at the earliest.
Methimazole can decrease the counts of white blood cells and this may predispose to infections. This is one of the side effect of methimazole called as agranulocytosis.
In case the counts are normal, sore throat will be treated as an infection without stopping methimazole.
I hope the above information helps you. Please report to your physician at the earliest and get the investigations done. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic.Take care of your daughter.
