What Causes Severe Swelling In Feet And Ankles?

I am experiencing severe swelling in my feet and ankles. I had some moderate swelling in my left foot last evening, but when I got up this morning, both feet were swelled to the point that I couldn t get my left shoe on. I have no pain anywhere. I currently have controlled COPD, but otherwise have textbook vitals. On a full fasting exam at the VA on 6/1/15, my BP was 111/69 with a BPM of 66, cholosterol was 155, LDL and HDL were acceptable with a very slight elevation in the LDL, but my blood was a little thick, so I donated a pint. What should I be checking for, or is this only an anomaly ? Thank you for your advice.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Feet and ankle swelling can be caused by a few things. The most common cause is venous insufficiency or leakage of your veins. If the valves in your veins are leaking, they can cause back flow of blood to your feet and ankles. This can cause swelling. Another potential cause is increased salt intake. Salt will make you retrain fluid and can cause swelling. Medications, especially blood pressure medications like Amlodipine or Diltiazem can also cause swelling. The dangerous cause of foot and ankle swelling would be from Heart Failure. Your vital signs are reassuring, but seeing a doctor for an evaluation would be prudent.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
