What Causes Severe Swelling In The Feet And Ankles?

Hi-- My Mother (93) has developed swollen feet and ankles, to a lesser extent. . I m wondering if this is related to her taking DILT XR (240 MG Capsule) although she s been on this medication for about 4-5 months. She doesn t seem affected in the morning. Thoughts?

Hi,

Yes, Diltiazem can cause fluid retentions and hence there is swelling in feet. This is quite possible with this drug even after 5 months. However, we should also rule out other causes like heart or kidney problem especially if there is also a history of shortness of breath or difficulty in lying flat.

I think this is good to talk to your doctor, he would rule out other causes and may need to change the drug.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
