What Causes Severe Throat Pain After Taking Zinnat?

My doctor said I have (or had...since about a week), acute bronchitis. My symptoms were a fever (about 100), slightly sore throat, bad case of dry mouth (which he said was regarding a medication i was on, so I got off right away - last Monday) and very swollen glands. I was put on anti biotics (Zinnat). It didn t work for a while. The biggest side effect was some of the worst pain I have ever felt (this is important because I have given natural birth to 2 healthy children!). The pain was from very enlarges submandibular bilateral salivary glands. It was just unbelievable. They are so much better today, and although you see them, it is 1/4 the size of Tuesday. However...do I need to be concerned that it could reoccur? I am noticing a lot of conversation about mumps. Do you think I need to be tested? I live in BArbados (I am American however) so I am now worried the doctor may not understand what is going on....

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,
I have read your query and understand the concern.
You might have been treated with incorrect antibiotics which either has given side effects or do not give satisfactory results,so it could be possible that you have swollen your submandibular glands.
You should do some blood works,ESR,blood electrolytes and ultrasound of local part to rule out mumps which you had a doubt in your more mind.
In my opinion, you should be given quinolones (levofloxacin),analgesics, antiinflammatories, antihistamines and other supportive treatment.
Consult your ENT specialist for complete treatment.
Regards,
