What Causes Severe Throat Pain After Tonsil Removal?

I got my tonsils removed 5 months ago. No complications as far as I know and recovery went fine. Now suddenly I am in a huge amount of pain, cant swollow, on my right side where my tonsils were. The pain started mildly 3 days ago and has gotten increasingly more painful every day.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There is a possibility that you have a throat infection or Pharyngitis and as the tonsillectomy site is increasingly painful due to infection. So once you should consult an ENT Specialist and get evaluated. A throat examination followed by throat swab culture can help in appropriate diagnosis. From your explanation it probably looks like bacterial infection so you can be advised a course of antibiotics like Augmentin and anti-inflammatory painkillers like Advil. Also such Cepacol lozenges for relief. Do warm saline gargles. Take steam inhalations and drink luke warm water. Avoid spicy and irritant foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
