What Causes Severe Vomiting And Fatigue During Early Pregnancy?
My 25 yr old Niece is 5 months pregnant. In the last weeks of her last pregnancy she had high blood pressure and delivered a bit early. Today she has vomited several times- no stomach cramps or diarrhea. She complains of dizziness-spots in front of her eyes (while vomiting-go figure) and fatigue. I took her blood pressure and lying down it was 122/82 PR109. Sitting it was 115/59 PR110. She does not feel like standing up.
Your niece's BP now is normal. You did a good job by checking it. Though not always true but since she had hypertension during her last pregnancy, it can recur. Do keep checking regularly.
As to vomiting, if she has been having such severe vomiting since a long time now (during this pregnancy) she may have what is called hyperemesis gravidarum, which needs hospitalisation and treatment as it may cause adverse effects on the pregnancy. If it is of a short duration, say a few hours or days, I would think of either gastritis or a stomach bug. Both conditions are most of the times self-limiting, you just need to keep her well hydrated and nourished till it subsides. However, if it becomes very severe you may need to see a physician.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Dr Geeta
