What Causes Severe Weakness And Immobility In The Legs?

Looking for answers on 93 year old woman who has episodes of extreme weakness with inability to move her legs. Has been hospitalized several times over the past 3 months, initially for low sodium levels. Oxygen levels are 97, blood tests are normal. Heart monitoring revealed no problem other than a fib which she has had for years. She takes synthroid for thyroid, blood pressure medication, a calcium chanel blocker, a beta blocker. She uses a walker and is overall very weak. Skin appears somewhat yellow. Can normally get to the bathroom using walker and helper, but sometimes she just cannot make her legs move, and she then uses her lifeline to call an ambulance. At the hospital, tests are normal and diagnosis is weakness . Would like to determine if this is old age or if there is another issue we could investigate.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is in relation with deficiency of certain elements as vitamins, minerals, calcium, and magnesium along with age-related muscle weakness giving rise to the symptoms at present. Usually, the routine parameters come fine except minor variations.

Recommend to undergo certain supportive measures rather than putting her in agony of list of series of evaluations with clueless endings.
• Maintain hydration with plenty of liquids
• Balanced nutritious diet rich in all necessary ingredients for her age
• Mental support is also vital
Physiotherapy at home has supportive role

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
