What Causes Severe Weight Loss, Dizziness And Headache While Suffering From Anemia?

My wife gets these health issues every so often and no one seems to know what is wrong with her. she was diagnosed with benign positional vertigo by an ER doctor a few years ago. Her symptoms are: Fatigue, Headaches, Sore neck and shoulders, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, dizziness (sometimes actually syncopal falls) she comes to and doesn t realize how long shes been out. She was really bad after giving birth to our daughter and was diagnosed with anemia at that time. she has lost about 10-12 Lbs in the last 2 weeks this has come about again. she has been pretty much bed ridden during this time due to the dizziness and headaches on moving around. Any thoughts?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The dizziness and headache, interfering with the daily and routine activities indicate very low level of hemoglobin and hematocrit as there may be severe loss of blood volume during the time of delivery and the same depth must not be replaced till this time. My guidelines at present:
- Get a complete hemogram report of her blood with nearest microbiologist or pathologist
- Allow her high iron diet with green leafy veg, cereals, pulses, legumes, jaggery on regular basis
- Depending upon the therapeutic level of the Hb, I suggest:

If the anemia is of mild degree - oral formulations of Ferric salt or Fumerous sulfate as tablet, syrup or capsule
If the anemia is of moderate degree - intravenous iron sucrose preparations, raise the Hb faster way
If the anemia is very severe - transfusion of packed red cells or whole blood is best recommended.
However, you are requested to provide your lab report during follow up discussion for better guidelines.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
