What Causes Shaking Of Body In Sleep?

I can't seem to find an answer for this, and I've looked all over the internet. While I was almost asleep, I was woken up because of my bed shaking. It lasted for about 30 seconds. Freaked me out! I have alot on my mind. Very stressed and it happend at 5 this morn and I haven't had any sleep. I was also having weird lucid dreams before this happend, so I was wondering if somehow my body could have made my bed shake.

I can understand this may be distressing for you. Let me try and clarify a few things so you get some answers about what may have actually happened here.

Sometimes one may exhibit movements of the legs (restless leg syndrome) or sudden violent movements (sleep movement disorder), which are also occasionally correspondent with nightmares. It seems like you had lucid dreams and it does point towards a nightmare which occurs in the REM phase of sleep and is also more common in the later hours of the night (it happened at 5 AM you mentioned so it is very likely this was a nightmare associated with a movement disorder).

Sleep is an active phenomenon, not simply a period of rest. Sleep disorders are caused due to specific neurotransmitter changes in the brain. The body requires a set mechanism and normalcy to sleep comfortably. Being unable to sleep restfully can be equated with being unable to breathe normally. There are also environmental and emotional factors that interplay here and they all need attention.

In this case it does seem to be a one off phenomenon. Do keep a watch and assess if you are getting this kind of reaction repeatedly. In some cases a dose of Vitamin E is beneficial in reducing sleep related movement disorders. Try that as Vitamin E is an over the counter vitamin and should not cause any side effect. And for tonight try sleeping on a mattress on the floor so there is no fear of falling or hurting yourself. In my opinion this will not repeat. In case you do have further queries please feel free to ask any more questions here. I wish that you feel alright soon.
