Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to read my question. First let me say that I have had a cough....not a bad one.....just an annoying one, and I asked my pcp about it because...even tho it was annoying, I was able to deal with it until I started to get sharp pains in my head each time I would cough. It was mainly on the left side towards the top of my head and would let up after the cough. She said the Lisinopril I had been taking could be the cause of the cough and decided to change the medication. That has worked for the coughing.....I only have an occasional cough now.....but the other day I swallowed a bit of water and it went down the wrong pipe and of course the coughing from that was pretty strong and the pain in my head started up again. It feels like a part of my brain wants to explode right there and leaves my head feeling like it has a bad bruise once the cough stopped. All this to say that I worry about an anyurism or something like it happening and want your opinion. My PCP sent me for and mri with contrast and they called to say the results were normal. What would be causing the sharp pains I get when I cough and could it lead to stroke or anyurism?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
A headache with a cough may indicate a raised intracranial pressure. However, the normal MRI is pretty assuring that nothing is very serious. However, if the problem is still there I would like you to see a doctor again. I just wonder what's your weight and age and you feel any problem with your vision? Rarely pressure can be raised in our brain with normal MRI. If we suspect that we can go ahead with more test. So better to see a doctor. He would see your eyes for swelling of your eyes disk ( the best option would be to find a neurologist to talk to).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
