What Causes Sharp Pain And Clogged Sensation In Ears?

Hello;I m rather worried about my symptoms and how long they ve lasted now. I went to the doctors a month ago after having ear pain. The feeling was a fullness in the ear and also a feeling of something crawling on the ear (I know this isn t a foreign object etc but best describes the sensation).I went and received some ear spray for a possible infection (although the doctor couldn t find anything unusual in the ears except slight swelling in the right one. I tried this spray 3 times a day in each ear as prompted and after 7 days of there being no difference I decided to see a doctor again (now over two weeks of having ear pain). Also, since the first doctor visit I began to also have sharp pain occasionally above the ear, or even below under the jaw/below the neck.It s now been a month and the pain is still in my ears and I have the sensation that something is stuck in my throat at the base. Sometimes it feels more strongly than others. I m a 19 year old male and don t have any history of health complications etc. I m worried now that I have throat cancer though which is making me extremely distressed; I feel it s not normal to have ear pain for this long.Thank you and I really appreciate any information from anyone as much as possible please. I feel I would really benefit from a professional opinion.Thank you again,Nathan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sharp pain and clogged sensation in the ear is commonly due to infection, inflammation / swelling in the middle ear. You are suggested to get clinically examined to detect AOM, CSOM, wax, etc., you need a course of oral antibiotics (Doxt-100 or Augmentin) and analgesics NSAIDS (Combiflam, one SOS when needed). Avoid swimming pools for a couple of days and be careful not to let water enter into your ears while taking bath. Some ear infections take time to heal.

Sensation of something being stuck in the throat can be esophageal dysphagia or globus pharyngeus. Get clinically examined and treated. In the meantime you should take antacids and PPI's (one SOS when needed) for relieve. Stay well hydrated. Avoid stress and addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
