What Causes Sharp Pain Behind The Ears In An Elderly Person?

My 83 yr. old mother has had fluid retention in her lower legs that lasik is not helping much, along with episodes of extreme perspiration with sharp pains behind her ears. The rest of the time she is very fatigued. She had ultrasound of her lower legs to rule out clots/blockages. I am fearful she is in some kind of cardiac distress or failure. Her PCP says she shows no signs of heart failure. He is basing that on listening to her chest. What should we do or what could these symptom indicate. (This has been going on for 4 months and came on suddenly.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about your 83 year old MOther suffering for the last 4 months with pains behind ears, fluid retention in lower limbs not responding to Lasix, PCP says no cardiac problem and so on.
The commonest causes I can think about with such a history are as follows:
There can be spasm of neck muscles causing nerve pinching and thus the pains behind ears.
Another reason can be due to problems in mastoid air cells now filled with fluid or pus.
The causes of water retention in legs can be as follows:
Hypothyroidism.
Low hemoglobin.
Low proteins.
Vascular problems is ruled out.
Kidney problems causing raised urea and creatinine.
All these things can be be diagnosed well and treated as per the cause found by proper and detailed clinical evaluation, examination and investigations by an ENT and other Specialists.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
