What Causes Sharp Pain Below The Ribcage In An Adolescent?
My 16 year old son has sharp pain in left side just below the rib cage and under the lowest portion of the rib cage. Tried laying down and that made it worse. Is better when sitting upright. Has not been able to sleep. No diarrhea, no vomiting, no fever. Has had congestion and nose blowing for a couple weeks.

The pain, with a history of cough and cold symptoms, may be due to inflammation of the muscles in that area or may be related to pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lung which is called the pleura).
The use of anti-inflammatory medications may help but if the pain worsens or additional symptoms occur then he should be seen. Anti-inflammatory medications include naproxen, ibuprofen, cataflam.
