What Causes Sharp Pain In Knee And Groin When In Sitting Position?

Stabbing pain in my left knee and pain in groin area on left side. Better if I stand up worse in sitting position. Any idea what it can be I have had this for 2 weeks, it is a little better as I am not taking any pain pills except at night. I did nothing just woke up with the pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems to be a muscular pain starting with a sudden jerky movement (may be in sleep). Another possibility of sciatic pain remains due to pyriformis muscle pressing over nerve in internal rotation of thigh and knee joint. Exact diagnosis would be by expert consultation of a orthopedic surgeon and needful investigations. Till then you should take rest, avoid painful movements. Use hot or cold pack. Apply muscle relaxant like Relaxyl, gently to painful area. Over the counter pain pill (Ibuprofen) would help to reduce the pain.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
