What Causes Sharp Pain In Left Knee While Suffering From Osteoarthritis In Knees?

I have type 2 diabetes; osteoarthritis in both knees, more severe in left knee. I experienced sharp pain in left knee today, causing my knee to buckle and I was unable to walk without assistance of a cane. This is the first time this has happened. I usually use a heat pad on my knees at night to relieve any pain, but today is the worst it has ever been. Could I be experiencing a blood clot In my left leg? If so, should I go to the emergency room now.?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to osteoarthritis. It can cause pain in the joints such as the knee. I suggest using anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen to relieve the pain. I also suggest using heating pads to relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms continue, you should consult a rheumatologist for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
