What Causes Sharp Pain In The Lower Abdomen On The Left Side?

Hi....I have a sharp pain that starts and stops in my lower left abdomen. It s just subsided but it has happened 3 or 4 times today. I m being seen by a specialist in a few weeks for potential colitis as diagnosed by my GP but that was for an upper abdomen pain. My blood work came back with mono and no signs of pancreatitis. I m a type 2 diabetic. Any concerns or just wait an see?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sharp pain in lower left abdomen is mostly due to diverticulitis. Diverticula are small pouches in colon... when it gets infected diverticulitis is formed causing inflammation & infection in diverticula.

Treatment is decided after CT scan report and consists of antibiotics & healthy diet with fibers.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
