What Causes Sharp Pain In The Right Shoulder After Chemotherapy?

I have had a power port since 2014 and after one year of chemo for breast cancer I have my port flushed monthly and accessed for any procedure. I m currently having pain in the port area, my right shoulder (the side the port is on), sharp pin like pain on the outside of the left thumb. Is this something I should be concerned about? Thank you for any information you may provide Judith Palmer

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, you should definitely evaluate this pain. Your pain is mostly due to thrombophlebitis (infection and inflammation) of port site veins. This is common complication. You will need oral antibiotics, painkiller and anti inflammatory drugs. Local application of antibiotic cream will also be effective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
