Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I developed sudden sharp pain in upper back ( area between shoulder blades ) while securing my car seat belt. I figured it must be a muscle spasm, so I took Ibuprofen 600 mg every 6hrs for the past 3 days, but the pain is on/off spontaneous or triggered by movement of upper body , more severe at night time ; physical exercise seems to alleviate the pain for a while and I am comfortable exercising. I tried some deep tissue massage on a foam roll with little help.Should I worry at this point or just give it a bit of rest ? Thank you for your expertise.
Noted your history of severe pain in between shoulder blades, pain triggered while applying seat belt, tried Ibuprofen, deep massage and so on , exercises do not increase pain in fact alleviates the pain. With the history you have provided this seems to be inflammation of the said muscles but it is difficult to understand the alleviation of pain on exercises. Hence I would advise you the following: Yes, it is better to consult a Doctor as the pain is in between shoulder blades and needs an urgent EKG and other cardiac evaluation just to confirm that it is not related to the heart. Local examination by a Doctor can tell better and he may advise you additional muscle relaxants, oral steroids, local applications to give you complete and permanent relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
