Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been having sharp upper back pain recently. it started occurring 2x s week, usually at night where I could not sleep and had to walk around all night due to the pain. Last Sunday I went to ER at 2am. they gave me drugs for pain and ranitidine for indigestion. My PCP was not available and I saw a NP yesterday that gave me Hydrocodon for the pain and referred me to an Orthopedic. I see them next Monday, but the pain is so bad I can not function at work and only get a couple hours of sleep per night. not sure what to do
Sharp pain in the upper back suggest some muscular or spine related issues. so taking drugs till confirmation of a diagnosis is the only solution to get rid of the pain.
You can have hot water compression also for relief. Also, have a complete X-ray or CT of back to rule out the possibility.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Nirav Nimavat,
