What Causes Sharp Pain On Right Thigh Radiating Towards Knee?

Hi. I have no lower back pain. However, four days ago I felt a shooting pain travelling down the front of my right thigh and down to below my knee. This occurred whenever I stood up. The pain is very severe but can be relieved if I bend at the waist or sit down. The pain comes every time I try to stand and gets worst the more upright I stand or lean back. If I lean forward from the waist, this relieves the pain. Its the same when I lay down. The pain has sometimes come from my right groin and always goes to just below my right knee. The pain here is worse. I have tried massaging my right buttock and sometimes this causes an improvement but sometimes not. I don t know if I should continue to stand up and fight the pain or rest it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The pain seems to be of the nerve that is being compressed and thus causing shooting pain in the thigh. Most commonly this is of sciatica but with no backache it is less likely.

Still, I would suggest you to get an X-ray of the lumbar spine done and if comes out to be normal then you may need to consult neurologist and get Nerve conduction studies done. Meanwhile, try taking painkillers and gabapentin might help in severe pain as you have mentioned.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
