What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Blurred Vision After Having BP Medication?

I am 54 and found out I have high blood pressure. My doctor prescribed Losartan/HCTZ 100-25mg. Started taking it 4/29/15. Also took 2.5 mg Diazepam Once a day (24) hours. I was coughing , not swollowing properly etc. Stopped taking BP meds last Wednesday night. Thursday my Dr said to take a benedryl 25 mg. Friday I went to work and around noon (Took nothing this day) started having shortness of breath, heart palpitations, red face and arms, blurred vision, muscles losing control, headache, slurred speech till I finally passed out. Takes a couple hours before strength comes back. Saturday (yesterday) wake up exhausted and go to work. Again around 12;30 same thing starts happening slowly. Make it a couple more hours till finally get so bad ambulance comes and ER visit happens. All tests come back normal...CT, ekg, blood, urine etc. Nothing wrong. come home sleep well, wake up this morning, do a few chores and it happens again. Home to bed all day and it happens again less severe. Dr. says allergic reaction to BP meds. Poison Center says all meds are out of my system. Any ideas? Please?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms may be due to conditions like angina, transient ischemic attack, hypoglycemia, cardiac dysrhythmias, autoimmune graves disease, substance abuse like cocaine, ethanol, salicylates, Addison's disease, adrenal crisis, hypersensitivity reaction to hydrochlorothiazide, anxiety disorder, or cardiogenic shock.

Next time please go for an ECG when the symptoms arise not after they subside. Also few tests like adrenal gland functioning, thyroid function tests are necessary to arrive at a specific diagnosis. Kindly consult a cardiologist or a neuro-physician for detailed clinical examination and testing to identify the exact cause and for appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
