What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Dizziness After Having Warfarin?
Hi my father is taking prescribed warfarin 5mg/day and is suffering at present with short breath, dizziness and general lack of movement - he is 87 and has been taking the warfarin for about 5 months now. Question; He has suffered from angina for 30 years had a triple bypass in 1999 and his GP said a tot of whisky was ok/good for him. I feel this may be conflicting with the warfarin and possibly contributing to Dads symptoms at the moment. He drinks about 1 large/double whisky each night...and seems worse afterwards?? Your thoughts would be most welcomed. Thank you Keith
Thank you Keith for your question! It seems that you concern is right; warfarin interacts with many drugs wihen taken together so the patient should be very careful as in that case anticoagulant effect could change dramatically and seriously damage the patient; the same is with concomitant intake of warfarin and large quantity of alcohol; especially when liver function is abnormal; so I recommend immediate stopping of whiskey intake, and urgent performance of INR test to see the resultant anticoagulation effect. If symptoms persist after alcohol intake habit stopping I recommend to consult urgently a neurologist to rule out any possible brain damage. Hope to have been of help to you.
