What Causes Shortness Of Breath In An Elderly Person With Heart Disease?

My 87 year old father has suddenly developed SOB that occurs suddenly without activity mostly at night while in a reclined position. His ejection fraction has decreased in the last 3 years from 50 to 45%. He has an artificial heart valve that was placed 7 years ago but seems to be functioning well still. Why would he suddenly develop shortness of breath and what can be done to stop this?

HI
Well come to HCM
I really appreciate your concern, with history of valvular heart disease and replaced valve it is likely to have shortness of breath it is the part of condition but it should not be long last or frequent, it is advisable to get done the EKG and coronary angiography if symptoms persist, left ventricle function is matter of concern, hope this information helps.
