Am 52, 112 Kg, history of MS and optic neuritis 12 years ago. Hodgkins 24 years ago. For a month now am waking up with sudden gasping of breath. Past two days it is happening during daytime.(5-6 times) more towards mornng. Blood test normal other than high cholesterol. ABG test show low paco2 and borderline pa02. base excess at -4. sleep apnea test a month back shows 8 incidents per hour. with cbab machine it has reduced to 0.8. feel that the gasping is increasing due to use of machine. any advice
You are suffering from CO2 wash out seen if there is increased respiratory rate setting in the ventilatory machine and peep value low or high concentration of oxygen etc.
So decreasing the respiratory rate and increasing peep value is useful. Other possibilities like a sleep apnea, cardiac failure or paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea or nocturnal asthma may lead to dyspnea.
