What Causes Shoulder Blade Pain Along With Stiffness In The Neck?

I have had severe pain in my right shoulder blade and it send a numbness and tingling down my arm and also causes muscle stiffness up into my neck. It stems from an old injury and is reoccurring. It feels like a ball of cartilage builds in the joint and can hear/feel it pop as I try to rotate my arm. Massaging, popping, and stretching seems to alleviate the pain temporarily then comes back later or the next day. In the past it has gone away after popping and causing severe stiffness for a few days and by getting a professional massage also helps temporarily. Please inform me what this could possibly be and how to treat in the future or now if a surgery is needed. Thanks!

Hello
Welcome to health care magic.

Neck stiffness, pain in shoulder blade with numbness in hands are symptoms of pinched nerve.

If I were your treating doctor,I would recommend,
-Visit to orthopaedician for physical examination and certain radiological investigations like MRI will be required if it is long standing problem and you have tried all conservative measures.
Surgical option will be adviced by the doctor according to this examination.
-Certain muscle relaxant drugs will be needed for relieving stiffness of neck.
-Analgesics like tab .acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be taken for couple of days when you are in acute pain.
-Local massage with warm compress for 15-30 minutes,3-4 times a day,may give some relief.
-Physical therapy, muscles strengthening exercises of neck and arm can be done with the help of physical therapist.
-Avoid abnormal postures of neck.Sit with neck and upper back aligned in one plane.
-Option of Corticosteroid injection can be considered with consultation of orthopaedic surgeon for non responding symptoms.

Hope this information helps.
Feel free to ask if any more doubts.
